In the previous posts, we have discussed a lot about the VMware step by step tutorials. Here is another VMware article for you. In this post, we will explain how to enable VMware Guest Isolation feature.
VMware guest isolation feature allows you to copy and paste text and files from the host system to the guest operating system. It also allows you to drag and drop files from the host system to the guest operating system, and copy and paste text and files from one virtual machine to other virtual machine.
It means you don’t need to setup network between virtual machines and the host system to copy or move data. Before configuring VMware Guest Isolation, first, you need to ensure that the VMware Tools are installed in the virtual machine.

To configure VMware Guest Isolation options, you need to perform the following steps:
  1. Select the desired virtual machine and open the Virtual Machine Settings window.
  2. Select the Options tab and then select Guest Isolation.
  3. In the right pane, select the Enable drag and drop and Enable copy and paste check boxes.
  4. Close the Virtual Machine Settings window.

Now, you are ready to perform copy/move or drag and drop files from host system to virtual machine. Refer the following figure.

The virtual networking components in VMware Workstation and VMware Player includes virtual switches, virtual network adapters, the virtual DHCP server, and the NAT device. You can configure any of the following types of virtual network connections for a VMware virtual machine:
  • Bridged
  • NAT
  • Host-only
  • Custom
In this post, we will only explain how to use Bridged network connection to connect a VMware virtual machine to the Internet (physical network). If you are interested to know more about the VMware network connections types, read the following article.
Understating and Configuring VMware Network Connections Types
In order to connect your VMware virtual machine to the Internet, you need to use the Bridged network connection. Bridged network connection connects a virtual machine to a network by using the network adapter on the host system. If the host system is on a network, this option is often the easiest way to allow the virtual machine to access to the physical network as well as to the Internet.
Note: You can also connect VMware virtual machine to the Internet using the NAT network connection.

Connecting a VMware Virtual Machine to the Internet

To connect a VMware virtual machine to the Internet using the bridged network connection, you need to perform the following steps:
  1. Select the desired virtual machine and open the Virtual Machine Settings.
  2. On the Virtual Machine Settings window, under the Hardware tab, select Network Adapter.

    Note: If you use the virtual machine on a laptop, select the Replicate physical network connection state check box. This setting allows the IP address to be renewed when you move from one wired/wireless network to another.
  4. Now, open the network adapter properties of your virtual machine and configure either the static IP address or obtain the TCP/IP settings from the DHCP server depending on your Service Provider’s settings.
  5. Close the network connection window.
  6. Now, you can see that your VMware virtual machine is connected to the Internet as shown in the following figure.

How To Install VMware Virtual Machine Using PXE Boot – WDS Client

In the previous post, we have prepared and configured a WDS server. In this post, we will explain how to install Windows operating system on VMware Workstation or VMware Workstation Player using PXE boot. VMware Workstation/Player allows you to install a guest operating system using the following options:
  1. Installer disc: Use this option to install a guest operating system using the physical DVD installation media.
  2. Installer disc image file (iso): Use this option to install a guest operating system using the ISO image file.
  3. I will install operating system later: Use this option to decide the installation option later. Typically used to perform the network-based installation using the PXE boot option.

Steps to Install VMware Virtual Machine Using PXE Boot

To install a VMware virtual machine using the PXE LAN boot option, you need to perform the following steps:
  1. Open the VMware Workstation/Player console and click Create a New Virtual Machine.Creating a new virtual machine in VMware
  2. On the New Virtual Machine Wizard, select the I will install operating system later radio button, and then click Next.Install VMware virtual machine Using PXE Boot
  3. On the Select a Guest Operating System page, select Microsoft Windows under the Guest operating system section. Select the compatible edition from the Version drop-down list and then click Next.
  4. On the Name the Virtual Machine page, specify the name and location for the virtual machine and then click Next.Specify Virtual Machine Name and Location
  5. On the Specify Disk Capacity page, select the desired option depending on your choice and then click Next.
  6. On the Ready to Create Virtual Machine page, click Customize Hardware. On the Hardware window, connect the virtual machine to a virtual switch that allows you to connect and access to WDS server.Customizing Vmware Virtual Machine HArdware
  7. Close the Create a new virtual machine wizard and power on the virtual machine. The following screen should be displayed.Booting virtual machine using PXE Boot option
    Note: If the virtual machine is unable to connect to the WDS server, ensure that the WDS server and PXE client machine are connected properly.
  8. Press the F12 key to start the network-based installation. If the PXE boot aborted message appears, reset the virtual machine and retry again. The booting process will start to load the Windows files from the WDS server. Specify the domain credentials of your domain and proceed next to continue the installation.Windows Deployment Services Setup page
  9. From the next screen, the installation process will remain same as we used to perform the installation using the local installation media.

In the first article in our series on DNS forwarders, we looked at some best practices for DNS forwarding. In this second article I’ll show you how to configure a DNS server with forwarders in Windows Server 2012 R2.
As always with Windows, you can change, add, and remove forwarders by using either the Windows GUI or the command prompt. I’ve listed steps on how to configure a DNS server to use forwarders using both the Windows GUI and the command prompt below.

1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.
Note: You can also type “DNS” without the quotes in the Start page, and it will find it for you.

2. Open DNS Manager.
Note: To use DNS Manager (and other administrative tools) on a server that does not have the DNS role installed on it, you must install the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) suitable for your OS (the equivalent of adminpak.msi in Windows Server 2003/XP). See our articles on how to install RSAT for Windows 7 and Windows 8 for more information on how to download, install, and configure the RSAT tools on those clients.
3. In the console tree, click on the applicable DNS server, usually it’s the same as the server you’re logged on to.
4.Right-click and select “Properties”.
Note: You may also double-click on the “Forwarders” item in the right pane.

5. On the Forwarders tab click “Edit”.
Note: If you already have existing forwarders, you can choose to edit these as well.

6. In the selected forwarder IP address list, type the IP address of a forwarder, and then click Enter.
Note: You do not need to enter the FQDN of the host, unless you want to. If name resolution traffic is not blocked the name will automatically be resolved.
Note: In this example I’ve used Google’s DNS servers. In most cases you’d want to use your own ISP’s DNS servers. However, in some cases you may want to add internal DNS servers as forwarders, depending on your routing topology.

In Windows Server 2012/R2, by default the DNS server waits 3 seconds for a response from one forwarder IP address before it tries to query the next forwarder’s IP address. This is configurable, if needed.
7. Repeat with additional forwarders, if needed.

8. When done, click “Ok” twice.

Note: In some cases you may want to configure your DNS server to only use forwarders, and if they fail to respond, you may want it not to attempt further recursion. To do so, un-select the “Use root hints if no forwarders are available”.
If you want to remove one or more forwarders in the future, repeat these steps and simply delete the entry.
To configure a DNS server to use forwarders using the Command Prompt:
1. Open the Command Prompt window with elevated permissions (Run as Administrator).

2. If you want to add the same DNS forwarders used in my previous example, in the Command Prompt window type the following command:
dnscmd <DNS_server_name_or_IP>/ResetForwarders 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 /timeout 3 /noslave

Some Final Notes:
  • Separate the DNS IP addresses by a space.
  • You cannot add individual entries one after the other, you must add all forwarders at the same time in one command. But you can add or change existing entries from DNS Manager.
  • The /timeout switch specifies the amount of time that your DNS server waits for the forwarder to respond.
  • The /slave switch indicates that the DNS server will not attempt to perform its own iterative queries if the forwarder fails to resolve the query.
  • The /noslave switch means that the DNS server will use its root hints file if no forwarders are available to resolve the query.
